Western Digital Offers Mobile Pro WD 2Go Personal Cloud Computing At Home
Cloud computing has seen exponential growth over the past years. Both large and small companies have jumped on the wagon, and used the technology for their data storage solution. How about cloud computing for individual needs? Whether for corporate or personal use, one problem that remains a concern for many is the cloud computing security and its privacy as the data are placed in the cloud.
To answer that, Western Digital (WD), a leading data backup solution company has just rolled out cloud computing for personal use and the application and mobile Pro WD 2go in a package called My Book Live. This drive is a personal cloud storage (personal cloud) that enables users to have a private cloud computing servers place at their home.
“You do not need to subscribe to external cloud services as the My Book Live can help you build your own cloud at home, which can be accessed at a any time and anywhere from your laptop, computer, tablet and mobile devices,” said Jim Welsh, Executive Vice President and General Manager, branded products and WD consumer electronics group, in a media briefing, Thursday (9/29/2011).
Jim demonstrates how easy it is to install the My Book Live driver (bundled on a CD) on the Personal Computer (PC) at home and get it to connect to mobile devices. Once the software is installed on home PCs, the newly-created cloud settings will appear and can be configured by the user. The My Book Live License is valid for life unless otherwise the software is totally damaged and could not be used any longer.
“You can directly download all your important files, from documents, images, videos, as you usually do on social media, blogs or Youtube. All the files you downloaded are stored in your personal folders, to be opened at any time and distributed to others, “explained Jim.
Users can also make a list of names of people given access to the cloud. All registered users will need to have a code in order to be able to gain access to the personal cloud . Users can configure the personal cloud in read-only and read and write modes.
Once the settings for your home computer cloud is completed and the data is all downloaded, you can start accessing your data in the cloud via mobile devices such as smart phones and tablets you have registered with the home cloud. The home cloud system will issue a code number (passkey) for your mobile devices.
You can open the web address www.WD2go.com from your mobile device and enter the code shown on the computer to a mobile device. After logging in, mobile your device will appear on the computer. This can be repeated for other mobile devices, (each is designated with different pass codes). However, the settings can not be used for the two identical devices, for example, you have two tablets iPad and HTC Flyer, then you need to decide which one will have access to to the home cloud between the two, your iPad or HTC Flyer
