Asus Eee Pad Transformers, Specs and technical Details

Since the Ipad booming almost all major tech manufacturers have jumped on the same wagon to tap the newly-created niche market initiated by Apple. Most major vendors have launched their own tablets with the majority of them opting for Google’ Android Operating system. One of the new comers to the tablet market is Taiwan-based Asus which has recently rolled out its newest tablet Asus Eee Pad Transformer.

Asus Eee Pad Transformers, Specs and technical Details

Asus Eee Transformer Pad runs on the latest Android 3.0 OS or commonly referred to as Android Honeycomb. Honeycomb is the right choice because it uses the OS that is designed  specifically for tablet devices unlike its predecessor  Froyo that is actually designed for Smartphones.

Design

As the name implies, Transformer has a feature  enabling it transform into a notebook. This can be done through the available dock which sells separately. Although sold separately, the dock has a design similar to the tablet and when combined the tablet and the dock constitute a netbook with battery and USB ports.

The back of the Eee tablet Pad has a quite rugged texture with geometric patterns . The Transformer’s textured rear offers an extra level of grip in contrast to smooth tablets such as the iPad 2, that are vulnerable to slippage. Like most tablets the Eee Pad front end contains wide black frame coated by metallic materials with perforation holes.

The front end of the Eee Pad dock also uses the same metallic material used  in the tablet. This makes Transformer looks like an ordinary  notebook when combined with its dock. Eee Pad uses 10.1 inch screen and is powered by In-Plane-Switching technology that enable it to  flip 178 degrees.

This device comes with an HDMI connection to play movies in High Definition television. Speakers can be found on the right and left ends. There are two cameras, a 1.2-megapixel front facing camera and a rear-end one  a 5-megapixel rear-facing one. They are both situated close to the top center of the tablet. On the right side are the SD  card slot, a Mini-HDMI port, a microphone pinhole, and a headphone jack. On the left are the power/lock button and volume rocker. Unfortunately , there is no USB port in the tablet. The absence of the USB port is apparently intentional to encourage users to purchase the dock which includes two USB ports, an SD card reader port, and its own battery.

The standard features  of a tablet are available with the Transformer such as Bluetooth 2.1 for audio and peripheral support. The Wi-Fi antenna supports bands up to 802.11n. Embedded sensors for screen brightness, accelerometer, and gyroscope are all also  included.

Asus Eee Pad Transformer comes with  no cellular option or  is a Wi-Fi-only tablet.

Pros:

  • Using Honeycomb Android OS
  • Dock keyboard has a battery
  • Interesting Design

Cons:

  • Not yet widely available for specific applications in the Android Honeycomb Market
  • Sometimes still need to touch the screen even if connected to the dock like a notebook

Asus Eee Pad Transformer Specifications:

  • Screen: 10.1 “LED backlight WXGA (1280×800); multi-touch touch 10 points; anti-scratch
  • Processor: Nvidia Tegra 2
  • Memory: 1GB
  • Storage: 16GB or 32 GB
  • Connections: WiFi 802.11 b / g / n, Bluetooth
  • Camera: 5 MP (back) and 1.2 MP (front)

HP Touchpad Review, Specs and Technical Details

As I am now a freelancer for a tech tabloid thanks to a friend recommendation and since the review I made is in a non English language I though it would be fine for me to share the English version of my review in this humble blog, of course I requested a permission first  before I did so. The first day of my stint really excited me because I was trusted to make reviews of couple of  gadgets that not publicly  available yet, essentially making me among the few who are lucky enough to get a hold on the newest devices before others do . Three days ago I was lucky to get a hold of the Touchpad,  tablet from HP  slated for release this summer, and was  assigned to write  HP TouchPad Review.

HP Touchpad Review, Specs and Technical Details

      HP Touchpad

HP Touchpad Specs and Technical Details

Just like Sony, HP is a laggard I the booming tablet market. After acquiring Palm , HP is aggressively introducing smartphones to compete with the likes of Iphone, Samsung Galaxy and other best selling smartphones and now a tablet called  HP TouchPad.  The long-awaited, Linux-based  WebOS-run tablet weighs less than 1 kg and is only 1.3 cm thick. It has a 9.7-inch screen  display  with 1024 x 768 pixels. HP TouchPad  is powered by 1.2 GHZ Qualcomm Snapdragon dual core  processor and comes with two models. The first  model  comes with a memory capacity 16 GB while the second has  32 GB. The Touchpad supports WiFi connection and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR. It is equipped with 1.3 MP front camera for videoconferencing and video calls. HP partnered with  the Amazon Kindle and  a number of publishers such as Time magazine, Fortune, and Sports Illlustrator to enable its users to access and shop thousands of ebooks and contents.

On first day I toyed with the this device I was very impressed with its  responsiveness  and with the quality of its sound speakers which are powered by  audio technology from Dr. Beats. The tablet uses Dre. Web browser that, unlike Ipad and Ipad 2 supports Flash and Open GL and HTM5. I can simply say the browser is surprisingly fast and responsive.

While the iPad and iPad2, Samsung, Motorola Xoom and other Android-run smartphones also feature multi-tasking, the way WebOS handles it is extremely elegant. The TouchPad  has a so-called like Just Type features that enables you  to synch all your contacts from the cloud. With this feature you don’t need to sift through pages and pages of icons or lists .With the above features HP Touchpad is really one of the serious and best alternatives to Ipad. Of course this won’t be an Ipad killer since the pioneer like Ipad is really hard to beat yet if you want to give another OS a chance, the HP Touchpad is a great choice. It of course lags behind Apple and Android in terms of the number of apps available from its online app store since it is only in inception stage. Apart from the lack of apps   I have so far no complaint and  found no downside of this device during its stay with me while writing this brief  HP Touchpad review.

Western Digital MyBook World Edition Reviews

The Western Digital MyBook World Edition NAS drive makes remote access and file sharing easy to implement. The Western Digital MyBook World  comes in two variants , the regular MyBook World Edition  drive that contains a 500GB hard drive, and  the MyBook World Edition II which incorporates two  500GB drives or 1 Tb in total . The 500GB single-drive version sells for  $380, which makes it an affordable choice  for network back up and file sharing. One notable shortcoming is however, it doesn’t incorporate a print server or a media server. Nonetheless should the slow transfer speeds do not discourage you, this is an excellent option for anytime-anywhere access as the data transfer, since the data transfer  in my opinion, is pretty slow.

Nonetheless, WDC loaded lots of functionality into MyBook World Edition . You can easily gain access to your files via HTTP, FTP, CIFS or SFTP, as  it integrates pre-installed media server software. It it offers you access via SSH to the Linux-based Operating system operating under the hood. It is able to do everything – network hard drive, Mac Time Machine, automatic backup, internet access for files and many more.

The pros: Very easy  to set up remote access and file sharing; The Western Digital MyBook World Edition provides support for Gigabit Ethernet; built-in  backup application allows you to recoverfiles.

The Cons: The write and speed transfer is quite slow  no print server or media server

The Western Digital MyBook World Edition Features

What makes the MyBook World Edition NAS drive stand out from similar products  is its remote access feature. You will find implementing remote access with Western Digital MyBook World convenient than others.

The majority of the  similar  products with remote access capabilities require  you to open ports on the router and configure dynamic DNS services which is something a novice find not easy to do. The Maxtor Fusion Personal Web Server is just one such device. Others use a workaround that needs you to upload the files you wish to access to Web server that acts like a cloud. Though this option is simple to apply, it takes  a careful execution to be sure that the files you need will actually  be accessible.

Western Digital has an agreement with  MioNet to provide remote access to MyBook World Edition . MioNet is software company that makes remote access software  that enables users to access remote drives and computers  as if you we accessing those hard drives from your local computer. MioNet makes a customized remote access  application for the MyBook World Edition that operates much like its own stand alone product.

Western Digital MyBook World Edition Review Conclusion :

The Western Digital MyBook World Edition is a reliable and quite affordable  NAS drive that makes remote access and file sharing a breeze . The downside is its slow data transfer speed

The data must be encrypted before being sent over the Internet, and must be stored in an encrypted state. Encryption must be at least 256 bits, and the user should be able to use your own key, which should never be sent to the server to use.

      Network Backup

A network backup can backup  multiple computers, servers and storage devices connected to the network in a local network accessible from a single computer.

      Continuous Data Protection

Service provides continuous data backup, or according to  a schedule. Both methods have their advantages and disadvantages. Most backup services on programming and support for a predetermined time. Some services provide continuous data that are used by major financial institutions and major online retailers backup. However, there is usually a compromise with the resources and system performance.

      Restoring files from the file

The ability of users to recover data from choosing without the help of a service that allows users to files with names and / or folders. Some services allow users to select files from the search for file names and folder date, file type for which backup and labels.

      Online access to backup files

Some backup service companies allow you  to access the backup files via a Web browser. Some don’t but the majority of them offer this functionality.

      Data compression

The data is typically compressed using a lossless compression to minimize the amount of bandwidth used.

      Differential data compression

To reduce network traffic, only the binary data that has changed from one day to the next, that are transferred to the backup servers.

      The use of the bandwidth

Users can configure the backup services to use more or less  bandwidth more or less, you can change this settings  in different times of the day.

What are the advantages of remote backup?

Remote backup has advantages over conventional methods of data backup:

      • Perhaps the most important protection is that the backups are stored in a different place than the original data. Traditional backup requires manually off-site backup media
      • Remote Backup does not require user intervention. The user does not need to tapes, CDs, change the label or other manual steps.
      • Unlimited data storage.
      • Backups are automatically created.
      • Files are saved correctly. Backup software is often installed with a list of ordinary files to backup. This set of files usually represents the system state when the software is installed, and often missing critical files such as files that are added later.
      • Some remote backup services will work continuously, backing up files as they are changed.
      • Most services, remote backup keeps a list of versions of your files.
      • Most services, remote backup with a 128-448 bits to transmit data on unsecured connection (eg Internet)
      • Some services can reduce backup remote backup transmits only changes the bits of binary data

      Disadvantages of remote backup

      • Remote backup has some disadvantages:
      • Depending on the available network bandwidth, data recovery may be slow. Since the data is stored externally, the data must either be accessed via the Internet or sent via a disk from the service provider of online backup.
      • Some emergency services have no guarantee that stored data will be kept secret – for example employees. So, to recommend the most, that the files are encrypted.
      • It is possible that the service could fail the remote backup or purchased, the profit from the accessibility of data or costs continue to affect service.
      • If the password encryption is lost, no data recovery is possible. But with managed services that should not be a problem.
      • The home broadband  internet users usually is subscribing to a data plan with monthly limits which prevent them from performing backup of large files

      Hybrid online backup

Hybrid online backup (usually  referred to as  hybrid cloud  backup) is a backup method that combine  local backup with offline backup to protect against local disasters.

After a long wait I finally got my hands on the  Samsung Galaxy Wifi Only , a new variant from a bitter and most serious  competitor of Apple’s Ipad thanks to a friend of mine, a tech magazine journalist who often make reviews of the latest gadgets.

      Samsung Galaxy Tab Wifi Only

The Galaxy Tab Wifi as its predecessors is powered by Google’s Android OS version 2.2 (Android Froyo) , the Tab has a 7 inch screen  is roughly  half the size of the iPad. At the first day  I used the Samsung Galaxy Tab Wifi for watching movies while on the go. It came as a pleasant surprise to me that the screen and resolution were of superb quality. You can conveniently watch your favorite movies in virtually any video formats as it supports a variety of video files such divx, xvid, mkv codec movies.

On the second day I used it to surf the web and read e-books , a nice alternative to the Kindle if you’re more convenient reading on a smaller display using Kindle for Android app which allows you to buy hundreds of e-books from Kindle store. Unlike on Ipad or Iphone you can access flash sites and enjoy movie streaming without hassle since the Galaxy Tab Wifi supports Adobe Flash player. While reading e-books I could  see the text clearly without any notable noises. You can navigate from one menu to another and perform multi tasking easily. Amazingly the menu tabs are highly responsive just like Ipad and Iphone.

Galaxy Tab Wifi only is loaded with lot of useful applications and as the advert says it does many things. The only con I found on  this device is few apps are somehow displayed on the center for unknown reasons.
