How to Password Protect a Folder in Windows 7

You store very personal or confidential files in your computer and you do not want others , may be including your family members to share those files. You can hide those files using “Do Not Show Hidden Files” in the ‘Folder Option” yet this is not secure enough to completely hide your files because at any times they can be unhidden and accessed. They are a lot of folder lock applications that can completely password protect and  hide folders including their files but they’re mostly paid software. In this post we will be dealing with trick on how to password protect a  folder in Windows 7.
Windows 7 already has  a basic  hidden feature  to lock  and password protect a file or a folder, so that if you don’t want to spend few bucks to buy paid protect password folder applications you can use the following trick.

  • Create a new folder in your computer, rename it with whatever  name, supposed you want to rename the folder as “My Folder”. Now open the folder right click inside the newly created folder and click new to create a new text document. Copy paste the following lines into the document and save as locker bat.

Quote:
Quote: cls
@ECHO OFF
title Folder Private
if EXIST “Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}” goto UNLOCK
if NOT EXIST Private goto MDLOCKER
:CONFIRM
echo Are you sure you want to lock the folder(Y/N)
set/p “cho=>”
if %cho%==Y goto LOCK
if %cho%==y goto LOCK
if %cho%==n goto END
if %cho%==N goto END
echo Invalid choice.
goto CONFIRM
:LOCK
ren Private “Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}”
attrib +h +s “Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}”
echo Folder locked
goto End
:UNLOCK
echo Enter password to unlock folder
set/p “pass=>”
if NOT %pass%== password here goto FAIL
attrib -h -s “Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}”
ren “Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}” Private
echo Folder Unlocked successfully
goto End
:FAIL
echo Invalid password
goto end
:MDLOCKER
md Private
echo Private created successfully
goto End
:End

  • Don’t forget to save it as all files (see the following picture) :

how to password protect a folder in Windows 7

  • Once the code is  copied code locate the following word :  password here (highlighted above  in blue color ), replace it with  a password with which you wish to password protect your folder.
  • “My Folder” folder now wil consist of two files namely lock.bat and text document . Double-click on the file lock.bat, this will create a new file name “Private” as seen in the following picture:

how to lock a folder in windows 7

  • Move all your personal or classified folders into the “Private”  folder
  • To lock and at the same time hide/  passsword protect the  private folderdouble click the lock.bat file. You will then be prompten with a command to lock (lock folder) or not. Y / N?

  • Type Y (on keyboard) and then enter, then the private folder will be hidden /  disappear
  • If you want to access the hidden and password-protected private  folder just click on the file lock file , then enter the password that you created earlier and hit Enter, private folder will appear and can be accessed again.

That’s how to password protect a folder in Windows 7 , this is quite useful  if you don’t  want advanced features offered by paid lock folder applications out there.

This post is an overview of core i5 vs core i7 comparison in their key features. The main difference of  Intel core processor i5 from Core i7 is the socket used in their cores.  Core i5  and some Intel Core i7 use LGA1156 socket while the latest core i7 processors  has now used  LGA1366 socket.  Core i7 processors that still use LGA1156 socket include Core i7 870 (2.93 GHz, 8 MB Cache) and the Core i7 875K (2.93 GHz, 8 Mb Cache). Core i7 processors  that uses LGA1366 socket, among others are the Core i7 920 (2.66 GHz, 8 MB Cache), Core i7 930 (2.80 GHz, 8 MB Cache), Core i7 950 (3:06 GHz, 8 MB Cache), Core i7 960 (3.2 GHz, 8 MB Cache) and other new variants of core i7.

core i5 vs core i7

Picture 1 : Intel Core i7 processor logo

Socket LGA1156,which was  initially paired with the P55 chipset is mainly designed for mainstream uaers, with less features and  has price tags. In its the latest chipset release , Intel launched  chipset H55, H57, and Q57 -lower-end chipsets dedicated for core i5 600-series processors. Chipset H55, H57, and Q57 do not differ much with the P55 but the system is intended to low-end market segment with lower prices.

Intel Core i5 Vs Core i7: Key feature differences

  • Unlike Core i5, Intel  core i7 features  the so- called Turbo Mode feature. Core i7 Processor is equipped with a turbo mode designed to perform overclock if one core is not utilized. For example the Core i7-965 with  a core speed of 3.20 GHz, will have processor speed  of 3:46 GHz when turbo mode  is activated. On top of that, Triple-Channel and Dual-Channel DD3 Memory of Intel  core i7 are paired with the X58 chipset, using a triple-channel DDR3 memory.
  • Core i5 uses the  traditional dual-channel memory. This means that the cost for purchasing a memory is  cheaper for those having this processor in their PCs. The latest Core i7  already support dual-channel memory, not a triple-channel again.
  • Hyper-threading feature:  Other key difference between Core i5 Vs Core i7 is how the two deal with hyper threading.  Hyper-threading is a technology used by Intel to simulate existing cores on the processor. Core i7 has a quad-core processor designed to  further improve computer performance when using multi-threading programs. Some Core i5 features hyper-threading, but some do not. Core i5 750 and  i5 760 do not have hyper-threading facilities, but have four physical cores, Core i5 660 has a hyper-threading feature  and two physical cores while there are no Core i5 processors  with more than four physical cores or four simulated cores. This means Core i7 has much more better performance in executing multi-threaded computing task than the

Overall the Core i5 is suitable for average users with no heavy computing needs while Core i7 is for those who need  better performance computers using multi-threaded programs or resources-hungry applications. Intel Core i5 with roughly half  the price of Core i7 is just fine for average users like me. This  overview of Core i5 Vs Intel Core i7 is compiled from various sources : here and here.

On January this year Sony Ericsson rolled out it latest Android-powered Smartphone –Xperia Arc. I just had an opportunity to get a hold on this hottest Android-run Sony Ericsson smartphone and bellow are a glimpse of my experience and review. Not found in its  rivals   Xperia Arc boasts features that are a mix of cell phone technology and other features found on other  devices such as  Reality Display screen, based on the Bravia Engine, the technology that was originally developed for  Sony television.

sony ericsson xperia arch review and specification /spesc

Picture 1 : Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc

The first impression when I got a hold on Xperia Arc is that  its design looks different from other smartphones with its distinctive inward-pointed edge . On top of that I believe  Xperia Arc is  among the thinness  Android phones on the market . Its body is dominated with  pretty robust  metal yet quite  comfortable to grasp.

This touch screen smartphone also has three physical buttons to navigate located at  the screen bottom, HDMI port to connect to HD televisions and  watch your captured videos or images, a  3.5mm headphone jack and Micro USB slot. To bad its camera button is too small, making those with large fingers like  find it quite hard to handle.

Equipped with a  8.1 megapixel resolution camera, Xperia Arc is able to produce crisp and bright images without any visible noises. Image processing is surprisingly quick,  once the camera button is hit  the image will almost instantly emerge on the phone display. It also contains the so-called Exmor R sensor, a technology commonly used in digital cameras designed to take pictures in a low light or dim environment. The Arc  is also capable of taking 720p videos and play them on your HD TVs, a feature present in Nokia N8 smartphone.

Xperia Arc has a  pretty large screen  of  4.2 inches using  the so-called Timescape  user interface  commonly found on many phones produced by Sony Ericsson. Xperia Arc also supports pinch to zoom in almost all menus on top of a technology called Reality Display based on  Bravia Engine television to make the  screen brighter.

With the Reality Display  embedded on this smartphone you will find watching images and videos as if you watch them a high definition television. This Reality Display is  comparable with those found on Apple’s Super Amoled yet from my personal observation this Reality Display beats Apple hands on.

Xperia Arc  is powered by  1 GHz processor from Qualcomm enabling you to  access menus and applications relatively smoothly. Its screen responsiveness in executing the command with a sweep fingers is simply amazing.
What is interesting is of course the existence of R Exmor technology for mobile products commonly found in cameras. The point is to support the images in low lighting.  When tested in a dimly-lit room and without flash,it is  able to produce  increased level of detail and image brightness. This is superior  when compared with other smart phone camera shot in  the same condition, not quite as perfect as those produced by high end digital cameras  though, you may still  find few negligible noises and blurred images.

Bellow are key Xperia Arc Features and Specifications :

Dimensions: 125 x 63 x 8.7-10 mm, 117 g
Display: 4.2 “16M-color TFT capacitive touchscreen, 854 x 480 pixels
CPU: MSM8255 Qualcomm’s Snapdragon platform 1 GHz
OS: Android 2.3 (Gingerbread)

Nikon D3100 review and Nikon D3100 Specs

Well, this in my second review about a digital camera, this time I want to present this humble blog my Nikon 3100 review, Nikon 3100 specs. Couple days ago, after a long wait (it is coming late in my country, poor me)    I at last  had an opportunity grab this D-SLR. I am of course not a professional but I’ve used various D-SLRs  cameras including with Canon 40D and  Canon T2i, XSi  and other Nikon cameras. When picking up  the camera for the first time, my first  reaction was, Boy this is so small and light. I have previously  read many reviews about this Nikon D3100 digital camera yet the fact that it is small and light really surprised. I was also quite surprised to find out how comfortable its grip was. I sound like exaggerated yet I found operating and taking a picture using  this Nikon D3100 very comfortable.

To my pleasant surprise Nikon D3100 has well-organized buttons  which is very useful when you want to record a video with a lever so avoiding  accidentally activating video recording mode. The  video recording lever once unlocked will be locked  thirty  seconds if you don’t record and the countdown starts the moment you unlock the lever. You can also record video while you’re in any imaging mode and  jump between taking pictures and recording videos with a simple unlocking of the lever.

Bellow are the highlight of Nikon D3100 specs

  • 14.2 mega pixel camera
  • Small and light weight, comfortable to hold and operate
  • Run on EXPEED2 processor & the CMOS sensor  to captures crystal clear images
  • Offers 1080p (HD) recording (max 10 minutes) with  excellent video quality  even in low light. This feature really helps me to capture videos in a dim environment.
  • It has  ISO from 100-3200 it can go larger however I really don’t think why I would wish something above that.
  • Supports SDXC cards which is in addition to  SD and SDHC

I am an beginner photographer and this Nikon D3100 really meets my needs. I just like its light weight and its small dimensions.

Conclusion:

Nikon D3100 might just be an entry-level SLR digital camera, yet its capability to offer quite high-quality picture quality and it also has the capacity to take High definition video. It is a cozy camera to hold and an easy one to use. I hope you find my posting on Nikon D3100 specs and humble review helpful.

Fix Slow Firefox on Mac

Got a Mac and use Firefox yet when using it you got painfully slow internet speed? All of the sudden Firefox on Mac runs and loads pages considerably slower?. Many Mac users have this issue particularly when using Firefox  latest version including me. My Firefox  crashed several times  and run extremely sluggish. I also discovered that that Activity Monitor showed Firefox as often using over 100% of CPU. I wonder too myself “why is my Mac so slow connecting to the internet?” What puzzled me was that I had no problem at all with the two other browsers installed on my Mac ; Google Chrome and Internet Explorer. While Firefox is definitely  one of my favorite browsers given its tons of very useful add-ons ever since I switched to it from the Internet Explorer I noticed  it gets slower over time on my Mac and takes up large memory space. What made freak out it also sometimes made my computer so slow, the mouse moved in jerky motion. I wondered “why is my Mac so slow? After doing some Googling and asked my fellow Mac forum  members for their opinions  finally I came up with the following solutions to the many called Firefox so slow on Mac problem.

Perform A Disk Repair. Use Disk Utility to perform a Disk Repair, (if you do not know how to that  click here  to find out ), while booting up on your install disk. Using Disk Utility’s Disk Repair will not do the magic by solving  all the problem and it is possible it does not find or fix  all directory-related  problems.

Clear your browser cache. To clean up Firefox cache , go to —> Tools –> History–> Clear History, when prompted with a small Windows telling if you want to clear history and cache within specific time range, choose Everything. Or you can use a third party software which not only can clean up browser cache but also get rid of your computer from junk files such as CCleaner.

Fix Slow Firefox on Mac

Update you Java and Adobe Flash player. Outdated Java and flash player might slow down Firefox performance so it is highly recommended you download the latest update.

Start Firefox in safe mode. When you run Firefox in  safe mode all the add-ons will be disabled, enabling you to tell if the slow Firefox on Mac  problem in fact has to do with the installed add-ons. To start Firefox in safe mode click on the the Firefox button located at the top of the browser, go over to the Help menu and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled. You may also activate Firefox’s safe mode pressing down the shift key while starting Firefox. If , after starting Firefox in safe mode the browser runs without lag then you may safely conclude the Add-ons is to blame. Proceed to the next step to disable Firefox Add-ons

Disable unneeded extensions and add-ons. Excessive add-ons and extensions may also reduce Firefox load time and response considerably. To disable Firefox extensions go to  Tools —>Add-ons, check the installed add-ons  and disabled unused ones.

Those are basically the steps to fix slow Firefox on Mac problem. If after implementing the above instruction your Firefox is still so slow on your Mac , try uninstalling it completely, clean up your registry and reinstall a fresh copy of the latest Firefox.

I had a meeting with a client last week who happened to bring with him a notebook running on Windows XP. After  spending few minutes talking with each other  we went to straight to business discussing our upcoming projects  when  all of a sudden when my client was trying  to play a video presentation and  increasing  the notebook volume by adjusting the volume icon  he was prompted by a following message There Are No Active Mixer Devices Available.

How To Fix There Are No Active Mixer Devices Available Error in Windows

Picture 1 : There Are No Active Mixer Devices Available Error Message

I thought this had to do with lost sndvol32 Windows System file yet it was not the case. It turned out this “There Are No Active Mixer Devices Available” error message was just because the Windows Audio service failed to start. In my personal  experience this can be caused by a particular application which interferes with the default Windows service settings.   Without any further rambling speech, here are what exactly I and my client did to sort this problem out :

This solution to the There Are No Active Mixer Devices Available error message is not only applicable to Windows XP users but is also for those running Windows Vista and Windows 7

  • First of all you have to make sure your computer has  a soundcard or audio chipset installed properly and also see to it that you have installed the audio drivers , the latest one if neccessary.
  • Navigate to Windows Services, in  Windows XP this can be accessed through Settings ——> Control Panel  ——>  Administrative Tools ——> Services or you can simply access it by typing services.msc in “Run” box (Click on Start and then hit  Run and type services.msc )
  • You will be then taken to the Windows services, locate the service named “Windows Audio” as shown bellow.

Activate Windows Audio Service for No Active Mixer Devices Available

Picture 2 Windows XP  Services

  • Double click the Windows Audio Service

windows xp, no sound device

Picture 2 : Start Windows XP Audio Service

  • Hit the Start Button

Congratulations you have brought to live your computer audio and you will not be annoyed again by this “There Are No Active Mixer Devices Available” error message. If you still encounter the same  problem after going through the above instruction then it’s most likely it is hardware-related problem meaning you have to spend few bucks to replace your computer sound card or  your audio chipset.

Fix Svchost.exe 100% CPU Utilization

A couple days ago I had  problem with my notebook Windows 7-powered  Sony Vaio  . For a couple of days I noticed  that my  laptop  had  the CPU usage  was  constantly between 98 and 100%, even at stand by without any active programs. It was painfully slow  even eight after startup and after I checked  running processes on your computer with Windows Task Manager, I was surprised to see svchost.exe 100% cpu utilization process.

I went on to check  monitor resources and found out that the  CPU was  fully occupied by wmiprvse.exe. Afterwards I tried to terminate the process  and  the CPU  usage returned  to normal at around 5-7%. My action did not  seem to cause  any problems since I was able to go about my computing job  and daily chore of  updateing my site without  the svchost.exe 100% cpu usage problem again but the what made me freak out was when I turned on the laptop again I encountered the same annoying svchost.exe 100 % CPU usage.

I also noticed that the svchost.exe process (RPCSS), which theoretically uses the 0-1% of cpu, was actually responsible for the overloading of the system and by killing the process , the CPU memory usage  returned  to normal at around 5% and take wmiprvse.exe 0% cpu.

What did I do to fix this svchost.exe 100% cpu utilization

After  asking for help in several  IT forums I learned that the culprit of this annoyance was not Viruses  nor Malwares. SVCHOST.EXE 100% CPU utilization is a bug that seems to affect some  Windows computer users, causing their computers to perform slower substantially. Microsoft automatic update utility turned out to be the culprit and this rare bug has affected few Windows XP, Vista as well as Windows 7 users.

svchost.exe 100% cpu utilization

Picture I : Windows Task manager

  • Quick Fix : Find out running process that causes memory overload by first terminating it. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to run Task manager, Go to Processes Tab and then hit the “End Process” button.This solution is only temporary and you will face the same problem next time you turn on your computer.
  • Disable Service: Try to find out which service that clogs your memory service by running Task Manager, sort the running processes by clicking on the Image Name tab then look for Svchost.exe  process that uses the highest memory usage , right click on it, go to Services and disable it. In Windows XP you can access Windows Service by going to Settings —–> Control Panel —-> Administrative Tools——>Services.  Right click on the service —->Properties —–>Disable Service
  • Disable Windows Automatic Updates :
  1. Click on Start > All programs > Windows Update
  2. In the opened Microsoft Windows Update window click on “Change Settings” in the left grey column.
  3. Disable Microsoft Update option and don’t care about the warnings.
  4. Go through the uninstall procedure of Microsoft Update, reboot your computer if necessary

The above procedures does not only apply for Windows 7 users but also for Windows XP users who experience   svchost.exe 100% cpu utilization. However If you are a Windows XP user it is highly advised to only follow the third procedure involving disabling Windows Automatic updates. If this does not you may also solve the svchost.exe 100% cpu utilization problem by instead updating Windows XP . Go to the following page to download the  KB927891 Windows update

Fix Iexplore.exe Application Error Message

This post is for those using internet explorer as their main browser which is not the browser I’m using right now anyway :) . I encounter this problem when I have to use IE to access a web page and all of a sudden my Internet explorer can not be opened and was instead prompted by the following message: iexplore.exe  Application Error The application failed to initialize Properly (0xc0000005). Click on OK to terminate the application.”

Bellow is the screenshot of the error message

Select the key and export it from the File menu to make a backup
Right-click the key, and choose Delete it from your computer registry Restart the computer if necessary
Memory related:  This “iexplorer application” error message can be caused by memory overload, though this is actually quite rare since the latest computer or notebook now comes with more powerful memory . You can reduce your memory load by reducing the number of application running  on your computer or if you are using an old PC you may want to upgrade the memory.
