Unlike its Windows predecessors, Windows 7 spares you the need to have a third party software if you want to create partition on your computer hard drive when your computer is running Windows . One of the key  Windows 7  features is it can directly create partition on windows without the help of other software. When Windows 7 is installed  for the first time it by default creates just one partition ie C: drive. This method of partitioning hard drive using built-in Windows 7 feature is referred to as Shrinking the System Partition

This post specifically discusses about dividing partition system and the procedures described here can also be used to shrink any  partition, not just the system partition. Also to be noted that the dividing partition system does not require a reboot and does not omit any file on a shared drive.

Here are the step-by-step guide to create partition in Windows 7;

Log on to your computer as Administrator.

Go to [Control Panel> System and Maintenance> Administrative Tools> Computer Management]. Another way is to right click on Computer icon on the desktop and select [Computer Management]. If you are prompted to enter an administrator password or confirmation, type the password.

  • Open the Disk Management console by clicking the arrows on the [Storage] menu

  • Select your hard disk that you want to partition, for example Drive C.
  • Right-click the disk that will be partitioned and select [Shrink Volume]. (see picture bellow)
