Change HTTP Proxy Server to Socks Proxy Server
You’re connected to the internet via SSH tunneling and wish to use certain applications that only support Http server such as Opera . This will surely give you a hard time if you wish to use application that simply do not support SOCK S server such as Internet Download Manager since its connections are only made via HTTP server.
To get around this we need a third party application that act as a “proxy converter” that changes a HTTP proxy into SOCK proxy. In this tutorial we will be using Polipoto the the job. This guide also applies when you’re using SSH tunneling software such as Putty or Tunnelier , Privoxy will change local SOCK server into local HTTP server. Polipo is a non-caching web proxy with sophisticated filtering capabilities for enhancing privacy, modifying web page data and HTTP headers, controlling access, and getting rid of advertisements and other objectionable Internet content.
Change SOCK Proxy into HTTP server with Polipo
Privoxy is available for download a stand-alone application which you can directly download from their website. You may also download its bundled version with TOR and Vidalia which I recommend you to use for more practical purposes here . And What is TOR ? Tor is an anonymity tool to protect online privacy and security on the Internet. Using Tor can help you anonymize web browsing and publishing, instant messaging, IRC, SSH, and other applications that use the TCP protocol. You can use the bundled application to surf anonymously. This will be discussed later, nowLet get straight to business
Step 1 : Download Tor, Privoxy and Vidalia bundle here , install it on your local computer (you may just install Polipo component) and run Polipo
Step 2 : Open Polipo config file with notepad or wordpad located in C:\Program Files\Vidalia Bundle\Polipo
Step 3 : change the default port 9050 used by Polipo to Socks Proxy port 1080 (default sock proxy port is 1080) and then save and close the file configuration
Step 4: The final step : Configure your applications that don’t support SOCKS proxy to use local Http server : Proxy 127.0.0.1 Port : 8118
