How To Turn Your Windows 7 Into a Wi-Fi Hotspot?

Don’t have a wireless router at your home yet you want to create a W-Fi  hotspot and  share internet connection with other family members, your kids even with your neighbors? How to do that? As with other Windows previous versions , Windows 7 hides so many unexposed features many noobs like me are not aware of. One of the hidden features of Windows 7 is you can turn your computer running the latest Windows version into a small personal hotpot. With just a few clicks and easy steps you can make your computer a Wi-Fi hotspot and share the internet connection wirelessly with other Wi-Fi capable devices such as smartphones, the iPod, iPad etc.

To create a Wi-Fi hotspot with a Windows 7 computer  make sure your wireless network adapter supports  virtual Wi-Fi feature. Most recent network adapters have generally supported this feature, if you are not sure you can just give the following tricks a try and if it does not work then you need to replace your network adapter with a virtual Wi-Fi ready adapter or you can first try to find your network adapter’s  latest driver update that supports the virtual Wi-Fi.

Okay then, how to turn your Windows 7 into a personal hotspot? It’s a piece of cake and here are no additional applications required to make your Windows 7 computer a Wi-Fi hotspot as you just need to take the following easy steps:

Make sure your computer that you want to turn into Wi-Fi hotspot is connected to the main internet connection (Wireless Modem/Cable/DSL)

  • Open the Command Prompt: Go to Start—-All Program—Accessories,  right click on Command Prompt and left click “Run as Administrator” as shown in the bellow picture.

Type the following line in the Command Prompt :

netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=yourhotspotname key=yourhotspotpassword

Note: Change the hotspot name and the ssid (password) with your own name and password (highlighted in red color)

or alternatively if you don’t want to type in the command line manually  you can create a bat file by copying and pasting it and save it with whatever name you like, don’t forget do add the .bat behind the file name, for example you want to create wifi.bat, you need to copy and paste the above command line and then hit “Save As” and rename it to wifi.bat. Don’t forget to put the newly-created file in the following location : C:\users\your computer user. Now type wifi.bat on the Command Prompt until you’re prompted with the following message:

Next, type the following command line bellow it, or you can create a bat file and call it the way you do with the above wifi.bat

netsh wlan start hostednetwork

Your virtual Wi-Fi hotspot has now been activated.

The last step is enable internet connection sharing properties. Go to Network and Sharing Center, click “Change Adapter Settings, Right Click on Wireless Network Connection that has the grey “Microsoft Virtual Miniport Adapter” bellow it, Click on Properties, Click the Sharing tab and check the two checkboxes bellow “Internet Connection Sharing”. Hit OK

Done, you have just created a personal  WI-Fi  hotspot and you can start connect multiple  Wi-Fi-enabled devices to it.

Note: when you turn off  or reboot the computer the virtual hotspot will be deactivated and you need you repeat the above steps.

How to Merge Hard Drive Partitions in Windows 7 and Vista

Windows 7 and Vista come with Disk Management or partition manager, a handy Windows built-in tool that can be used to merge 2  partitions or more , shrink partitions and add unallocated space to the hard drive partition. Combining two partitions or more in Windows 7 and Vista, however, can only be done semi manually, you need to use a partition software to do the job automatically. Aside from merge partitions , using this tool you can also re-size and  expand existing partitions and many more.

In this post I will outline a simple way to do the above task using Windows Disk management. Before you merge the partition, the first thing to do is, and  it is higly recommended , you back up the entire folders and files and move them into an external storage  such as an external hard drive or  other movable storage devices with large space just in case you screw up with the steps bellow.

Now suppose that you have 2 partitions on your hard drive computer and you name them with drive C, drive D  and you want to merge drive D with Drive C. The first thing you need to do is move all files and folder from drive D to an external storage or if you if you’re sure you can execute the next steps correctly you may simply move them to drive C.

The next step is go to  Windows Disk Management, in Windows 7 you can access it by typing “partition” in the search box. See the bellow screenshot:

windows 7 disk management to merge 2 hard drive partitions

On the “Disk management” windows right click on the drive D and select “delete volume” to  merge hard drive partitions in drive C and D.

How To Perform Schedule Computer Defrag With Windows 7 Disk Defragmenter

As time passes and with frequent use, files and folders on a computer’s hard disk will break down or get fragmented. A computer program needs to access different files on the hard disk drive anytime it is run. If these files are distributed  on opposite sides of the hard disk rather than gathered and ordered neatly, as they need  to be, your computer will need to work extra hard and need more time gain access to the data it requires. In some instances, poor defragmenting might even result in an application to cease working completely.

Consequently, your computer  will be able to access files more effectively. By effectively organizing files and folders, defragmenting will leave the device’s free space in a single big slice. This may enable new files to be save in you computer in orderly manner , therefore decreasing the need for  defragmentation later on.

Schedule Disk Defrag using Windows 7 Disk Defragmenter

Click the Start button and type “defrag” without quote  in the search box and then hit Enter

      windows 7 disk defragmenter windows

I had a meeting with a client last week who happened to bring with him a notebook running on Windows XP. After  spending few minutes talking with each other  we went to straight to business discussing our upcoming projects  when  all of a sudden when my client was trying  to play a video presentation and  increasing  the notebook volume by adjusting the volume icon  he was prompted by a following message There Are No Active Mixer Devices Available.

I thought this had to do with lost sndvol32 Windows System file yet it was not the case. It turned out this “There Are No Active Mixer Devices Available” error message was just because the Windows Audio service failed to start. In my personal  experience this can be caused by a particular application which interferes with the default Windows service settings.   Without any further rambling speech, here are what exactly I and my client did to sort this problem out :

This solution to the There Are No Active Mixer Devices Available error message is not only applicable to Windows XP users but is also for those running Windows Vista and Windows 7

      • First of all you have to make sure your computer has  a soundcard or audio chipset installed properly and also see to it that you have installed the audio drivers , the latest one if neccessary.
      • Navigate to Windows Services, in  Windows XP this can be accessed through Settings ——> Control Panel  ——>  Administrative Tools ——> Services or you can simply access it by typing services.msc in “Run” box (Click on Start and then hit  Run and type services.msc )
      • You will be then taken to the Windows services, locate the service named “Windows Audio” as shown bellow.
