There are three alternatives to connect desktop computers to a wireless network notably an USB Wireless Adapter, a PCI wireless network adapter, or a card bus adapter ( for your laptop computers). Well, when you come to decide – which type of wireless adapter for desktop computer  is your choice?

Perhaps the most popular and the widely use network adapters is USB wireless adapters that you can connect to one of USB ports. This is simply because you can make your desktop computer wireless instantly  by plugging  a wireless USB adapter into any available USB port. In fact, it takes only a matter of just a few seconds to plug in a USB adapter and begin using the internet wirelessly. There are many advantages  why it is best to go for USB wireless adapters for your wireless connection particularly if you have to cope with several computers at home network or perhaps at  place of work.

Picture 1 :  USB Wireless Adapter

The next wireless device which can make desktop computers wireless is wireless PCI (PCI = white slots inside a computer) card adapter. They are internal wireless cards designed to fit into one of the PCI slots located at the back of a desktop computer. Just like USB adapters this device allows for high performance wireless connectivity for your desktop computer with extended range. Installing a PCI network adapters isn’t as difficult as you may have thought. You can just  take away the side panel from the desktop computer and put the wireless PCI card into any of the white-colored slots inside. There’s actually just one way the card may be installed. Reading the manual guide prior to installing it is definitely the best thing that you can do to ensure a smooth installation and kick off of your wireless connection using your desktop computers.

Picture 2 :  PCI Wireless Adapter

Both USB and PCI network adapters for desktop  are typically equally fast, but my personal experience has been the internal wireless device much less likely to get damaged by anyone bumping into it or banging it over accidentally. However it does require you to open up the case and set it up. If you’re not comfortable performing that, opt for the USB. Usually they’re within a few bucks price wise of each other.

If you’re a newbie it’s highly recommended for you to go for  USB adapters, since it is much easier to install and offer you better signal strength if your desktop computer is quite far from the router. You have to be aware though that when you are setting them up, you need to install software/drivers for the USB wireless adapters before you plug them into the computers.

You need USB adapter “G” for a couple of reasons. First of all, if your wireless access point or or wireless router  has 802.11g capability, then your USB wireless adapters will transfer data a lot faster than any broadband Internet service you may have. Secondly, the “G” will be backward compatible with your router if your router has only “B” speed. Lastly, with N being prominent now, G speed wireless products is affordable.

Please keep in mind  that you may get less expensive wireless adapters or whatever, but reliable adapters will cost you just as much or more than the less costlier one. Wireless equipment is one area in which you really do not want to go for cheap devices.  Wireless connection  is less reliable (slower)  than a wired LAN connection, so that you want a reliable wireless adapter for desktop you need to get something decent to avoid occurrences where you’re annoyed  with the its performance.

How to Connect a Laptop to a TV Using Cable

There are nowadays lots of means to enjoy your favorite flicks and TV shows or TV Episodes over a broadband internet connection on your PC for reasonable fee by subscribing to steaming sites such as Netflix, Hulu etc  or even if you’re smart enough  you can watch your favorite movies  free of charge. Alas, watching such media in  your home office doesn’t make for the most fulfilling experience. If you want to escape the confinement and enjoy your entertainment on the big screen in the living room, this posting will give you a hint on how to connect how to connect a laptop to a tv.

You can  connect your laptop or  PC to your TV set to watch DivX, FLV or DVD video formats playable on your PC but on no other available players.

Before you can indulge yourself watching streaming media on your TV , you  must look into several requirements. Your computer or laptop should have a Video card with a TV-OUT connector. The connection will usually be integrated in your Video card and situated at the back of your PC. You could  link your TV set  this with your notebook as well since  the majority of them possess this kind of connector (see picture below).

How to connect a laptop to a tv

A TV-OUT connector cable will be plugged in both devices to connect them to each other. The cable can indicate which line goes in and which one goes out, so keep in mind that you plug IN your TV set OUT from your computer or laptop. You should also get the same type of connector for your TV set called the TV-IN or VIDEO-IN connector. However, you will also have to get a LINE-OUT connector of the Soundcard. If you don’t own a right connector for your TV, you could  use your VCR or an extra round connector that appears like an antenna connector device.

If you have a conventional TV, you almost certainly have an S-Video port or a composite video port. If your Television has an S-video port then your computer or laptop should have an S-video port  and you can connect them with an S-Video to S-Video cable. Moreover, the number of pins on the S-video ports must match. For example, if your TV set has a 4-pin S-video port, your computer or laptop must also have a 4-pin port.

If you have an High Definition Television, then you will most likely have an HDMI Port or a DVI port or a VGA port. First of all,  ensure that your pc has also the corresponding port and you might afterwards connect with a HDMI to HDMI cable or DVI to DVI cable or VGA to VGA cable.

HDMI offers best picture quality on your TV yet the majority of computers might not have an HDMI port. Still you can still use a DVI to HDMI cable to connect the DVI output port on your computer to the HDMI input port on your HDTV! This is possible since HDMI is compatible with DVI. Hence you can watch the best quality pictures on your TV.

The following are the steps to connect a laptop or a computer to a TV:

  1. Make sure that the computer or laptop and Tv set are situated at close distances. This is dependent on your cable length after which you can turn  your computer off. Disconnect the monitor alone
  2. Connect the appropriate video cable to the computer’s output port and the TV’s input port. The cable can indicate which line goes in and which one goes out, so make sure that you plug IN your TV set and plug OUT from your computer.
  3. Turn on your TV  and set it to the input that fits the output on your computer for example. you may set it  from the default to a different selection which may be “S-Video” or “S-VHS” or “HDMI 1
  4. Turn on your computer. You will see Windows displayed on your Television. If the screen looks stretched, or part of the screen appears cut off, you can  configure the screen resolution in Windows. If you cannot see Windows on your TV, you might have to reconnect the computer to your monitor and change the screen resolution before you connect to your TV. If higher resolutions cause issues, then decrease the resolution to say, 800×600. Now you have connected your laptop to your PC and watch streaming media on your television. Enjoy..

How to clean Laptop LCD screen

The following tips have actually been discussed by many on the internet. I want to share my personal experience in dealing with this one of the most vulnerable parts of your laptop and not to repeat my  recklessness  in the past. I had my LCD laptop replaced with a new one few months ago because I didn’t take good care of it.

Flat screen monitors, also known as LCD monitors, a little different than their CRT cousins when it comes to cleaning. Standard CRT monitor has a glass screen and can be pretty much cleaned in the same way as you would any other glasses in your home or office. Flat-screen monitors, however, requires little special care when it comes to cleaning. This is because the LCD is much more sensitive and easily scratched and damaged. The same thing applies to your LCD television.

How to clean LCD screen:

  1. Prepare the tools needed; soft brush, soft cloth etc.. If you buy a good LCD cleaner package, for example from PixelClean Deluxe, already include all the requirements.
  2. Turn off the monitor. If the display is switched off, it’s easier to look dirty or greasy areas.
  3. Special LCD cleaning spray and then use a soft dry cloth, gently or to be precise very gently remove the screen. Soft cloth which I mean roughly the same with glasses cleaning cloth. See Tip # 1 below for the type of fabric should be avoided.
  4. If a dry cloth does not completely remove dirt or grease, do not press harder because of how This Can often cause pixels burned or damaged.5. Repeat spray and a special LCD cleaning cloth back with caution. See Tip # 2 below for products that must be avoided.
  5. The edge of the screen is made of plastic that surrounds the screen can be cleaned with a multipurpose cleaner but be careful to avoid contact with the LCD screen itself.
  6. I think it is not hard to clean the LCD, which is important we do this carefully.

Tips:

  1. Avoid using paper towels, toilet paper, tissue paper, or something like your clothes to remove the LCD screen. Materials non-ultra soft can easily scratch the screen.
  2. Avoid cleaning products containing ammonia, ethyl alcohol, acetone, toluene, ethyl acid, or methyl chloride. These chemicals can react with materials made from the LCD screen that can display a yellow or cause damage to other species.
  3. Do not spray liquid directly on the LCD screen is turned on because it will cause damage.

How to keep your computer from overheating

Have ever you had situation where your laptop or  computer is unusually hot and sometimes turn itself off?  Then you’re not alone since chances are many computers owners may have similar situation

Why are computers too hot and turn itself off? Generally speaking there are various  factors that cause computers to overheat. These can be due to both hardware failure and incompatible drivers or software as well as the result of wrong computer settings.

Computers that shut itself down may be  the result of  not only overheating but several factors may also play a role such as damaged memory, driver or software incompatibility, hardware conflict and virus or spyware infections. It is highly recommended that you install application that monitor you computer performance such as, fan speed, CPU temperature etc

Before we proceed, first of all you must take a look at the following facts: different processors have different maximum tolerable computer or CPU temperature range. AMD-powered computers’ maximum tolerable temperature range is 85oC  whilst those running the latest  Intel processors is 72oC.

Below are a list of major causes that make your  computer to overheat:

  1. Wrong BIOS settings. If you perform BIOS  overclok you might run a risk of making  your computer too hot even in the worst scenario you can cause the computer not functioning at all. The only solution to this problem is to revert back the  default BIOS settings.
  2. You’re an avid gamers and you use your computers to play resources-hungry games. These type of games eat into your memory resources, processors and VGA hardware. In this case you get your computer processor to work extra hard. This will result in computer overheating and if your processor is not able to handle it anymore your computer will turn itself off immediately. The solution : add the suction fan at the back of the CPU to suck hot air from inside of the CPU
  3. Damaged or dirty cooling fan. If the coolling fan speed decreases or is  very dusty, the cooling air it suplies the CPU will also decrease resulting in hot or overheating processor. How to get aroung this? open the cooling fan, clean the dust and make sure that the fan is still spinning normally. Faulty or damaged cooling fan should be replaced with a new one.
  4. Power supply leakage. This will result in significant increases in the voltage output to the mainboard and other components. The unusually high voltage will cause electrical components of the CPU to overheat or even damaged. To resolve this problem you’re recommended to use stabilizer to keep the voltage stable.
  5. Dusty or dirty aluminum heatsink/  processor or the VGA cooler). If the cooling fan is just fine, make sure that the aluminum coolant is clean and  dust-free because dust can inhibit the cooling process supplied  by a fan. Solution; Clean  heatsink with a good cleaner and this should be done on a regular basis ie six-monthly.
  6. Aluminum heatsink coolant is not appropriatly placed. If aluminum heatsink is not properly attached to the the processor, the processor will overheat and will likely make your computer turn itself off. The solution: Open the your CPU and carefully go to the fan and check that the aluminum heatsink attached properly on the processor.  You might also want  to check if the coolant at the alumunium surface is still clean or apply new paste if it is dirty.

How To Clone A Hard Drive In Windows

Cloning hard drive is a process in which all files and programs  from  a computer hard drive are copied to another . This an alternative to running a new instance of operating system installation and installing software on the new disk one by one . Suppose you wish to clone hard disk A that has already contained an operating system and programs to an empty  drive B with no  installed OS or program.  You can do this by cloning hard drive.

This method is often used by computer  owners who have just bought a new computer  or those having a network of more than one computers. By performing hard drive cloning you don’t need to install operating system or install each program one by one on a new hard drive thus you can save time  and energy.
You can use cloning software available on the market such as DriveImage XML (DIX), Norton Ghost etc to do the job of transferring all files and program from one computer to another. But for Windows users who have been  accustomed to and familiar with Windows Explorer, this whole process can actually  be performed using Windows Explorer. This however should be done with extra care since the whole processes are done in exact sequence, though  not take as much time as installing new operating system.

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to clone a hard drive using Windows Explorer  Menu :

  1. Format and partition the new hard drive. First of all, you need to create  partition and format the hard drive which is a mandatory before using a new hard drive.
  2. Set  hard drive status. Hard drives  that will be copied  (source hard drive ) and a new target hard drive  must both be readable by the computer. You need to adjust the jumper settings located on the back of both hard drives or you can do that by connecting both hard drives with the computer mainboard. Hard drive Source will then act as  master hard drive while the new hard drive will act as slave hard drive (target hard drive)
  3. Hard Drive Cloning process.

After you complete the two steps above you can no proceed to the main job of cloning the hard drive.

  1. Start Windows Explorer.
Go to Windows explorer and Show all hidden files by clicking the Tools menu and select Folder Options, and then click on the View button. Check  the Show hidden files  and folders option, then click the Apply button, then click the OK button.
  2. Select all the files and the entire folders on your source  hard drive except the Windows folder. Then click the Copy option on the Edit Menubar.
Click the Paste option on the menubar Edit on the  second target hard drive then  create new folders in the root directory and rename it with “Windows”
  3. Click the Windows folder on the source hard disk then select all files and all folders except Win386.swp file.
Then click the Copy option on the Edit menubar.
  4. Click the Paste option on the menubar on Edit to the Windows folder on the   target hard drive

Alternatively you can use the following a  quite easy method using Windows built-in command.

  1. Install Windows and all the  programs you wish to clone  on  the hard drive that will be used as source drive  and put it on the Primary IDE Master.
Boot your computer  from the mater hard drive carriers, make sure you have configured the new  hard drive as IDE Slave
  2. Go to  Windows command prompt  by clicking Start> Run > CMD (In Windows XP)
  3. Perform quick formatting of the new hard disk by typing following command format d: / q / u
When finished, exit the windows directory then press enter
    Type  the following command: xcopy / h / e / r / y / s / c / kc: d: press
  4. Enter to start the hard drive cloning process.

This way, we will  get a clone of  hard drive which contains  exactly the same content as  the original  hard drive.

What is router?  a router is  a network device  that serves to connect  two or more computer networks and   channel data from one computer to another within a network. Routers are also used to connect smaller networks to larger one  and are also used to divide large networks into  smaller ones

Now let’s get to the point. You have a computer connected to DSL / broadband connection and  run two networks (let’s say Network 1 and Network 2)  at your office and you wish to connect all computers within  both networks to access the internet or simply share files or printers between the two networks.  You can make the computer that connect to the internet a simple  router and what you need is a computer installed with Windows XP  Professional, three Local Area Network cards (NIC) , a switch or hub (whichever is applicable).

Step One : Enable IP Forwarding on Windows Registry

Before you proceed make sure you first back-up you Windows registry just  in case you mess up with it.

The first thing you do is to enable IP  forwarding on the computer you want to make a router. Go to Start and click Run then type in regedit to run registry editor and locate the the following registry key.

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Services/TcpipParameters
  • Right click IPEnableRouter registry object, and click Modify. Change IPEnableRouter window  registry value to 1 and then and click OK, close the registry editor and reboot your computer.

Step Two : Configure Router For  First LAN Card (Network I)

Go to Control Panel, select Network Connections, right click on the first  LAN Card and then select Properties.

On the General tab, select Internet Protocol (TCP / IP),   select  Properties and assign it with the following profile :
Network Card I (connect to network I):
IP: 10.10.10.1
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway : leave it blank

Step Three : Configure Router For Second  LAN Card  (Network 2)

This second step is similar to the first configuration except for the IP address configuration :
IP: 192.168.20.1
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway : leave it blank

Step Four : Configure all the client computers  with following profile.

Network 1
IP: 10.10.10.2-254
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway : 10.10.10.1

Network 2
IP: 192.168.20.2-254
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.20.1

To make sure you have successfully set up a working connection between the two networks run a ping command  from a workstation computer in network 1 and nerwork 2
